Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction in the Bay Area | Dental Implant Surgeon DanvilleWhat can start as a nasty toothache or painful, swollen gums can quickly get out of hand until your tooth has passed the point of no return. In these severe situations, your general dentist may recommend a tooth extraction to keep the rest of your smile safe from dental decay, gum disease, and further harm. At Diablo Valley Implant Dentistry in Danville, we leave the general dentistry work to your regular dentist and focus on tooth extractions and implant dentistry.

How Is A Tooth Extraction Performed?

First of all, we never “pull” teeth here! The procedure of extracting a tooth is much more delicate and comfortable:

  • Numb the treatment area entirely
  • Our experienced oral surgeon, Dr. Anthony Lizano holds the tooth with a pair of dental forceps
  • Gently moves the target tooth back and forth until it comes out by itself

Thanks to this approach, most Bay Area patients don’t feel it when their tooth comes out. For our more anxious patients, we also have several sedation options, including IV Sedation, that can help calm any nerves you may have. After the procedure, we will dress the affected area with fresh gauze. The patient is typically wholly healed in less than a week. Dr. Anthony Lizano will prescribe pain medication if needed. If the situation calls for it, we can help patients choose how they want to replace their missing teeth.

Signs That An Extraction May Be Necessary

Dr. Anthony Lizano may recommend a tooth extraction when experiencing tooth pain, discomfort, or swelling. This procedure is necessary for those who have one or more of the following:

  • Overcrowding: When there is not enough room in your mouth and teeth shifting causes discomfort and misalignment.
  • Damage: When a tooth is severely cracked, damaged, or broken for repair.
  • Infection: Serious tooth decay that extends to the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.
  • Orthodontic treatment: When teeth need to be correctly aligned, and teeth need to be removed to make room.

If we can save a patient’s tooth, we will not extract it. The first step in determining whether or not extraction is necessary is to examine the mouth, teeth, and gums in detail. Our oral surgeon, Dr. Anthony Lizano will make this decision based on dental X-rays and his extensive experience.
